Press statement by President Maia Sandu at the joint press conference with Federal Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz

Chancellor Scholz,

Members of the press,

Thank you for the warm welcome in Berlin. It’s a privilege to stand alongside Germany—a key ally in Moldova’s journey towards stability, democracy, and prosperity.

I would like to start by thanking you, Chancellor, and all the people of Germany, for your robust support for our neighbour, Ukraine.

As Russia opened a new front in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine last week, we are reminded of the grave threats facing Europe, a Europe committed to peace and democratic values.

Supporting Ukraine is not just solidarity—it’s defending the principles of our collective security and freedom.

By supporting Ukraine, you also support Moldova. My country wouldn’t be safe today, if not for Ukraine’s resistance.

At the same time, supporting Moldova strengthens Ukraine. A democratic, stable Moldova acts as a steadfast neighbour to Ukraine, with whom we share 1200 km of border, and as a growing security partner on the EU's eastern frontier.

I’m deeply grateful for Germany’s ongoing assistance, especially during these challenging times.

The Moldova Support Platform is a prime example of such cooperation. Launched by Germany, alongside Romania and France, in March 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this initiative has helped us maintain stability, support Ukrainian refugees, escape Russia’s energy blackmail, and advance crucial economic and social reforms.

As we move forward, it is evolving into a Partnership Platform, focusing on longer-term cooperation and development to further strengthen our mutual goals.

Our cooperation also extends to broader security matters. With your support, we’re strengthening Moldova’s resilience against threats to our sovereignty and our European path.

Germany is also an important economic partner. Numerous German companies are actively engaged in Moldova, either operating directly or sourcing supplies from Moldovan manufacturers. This cooperation – alongside your support to our small and medium-sized enterprises – creates jobs and boosts our economy.

We invite more German investment in manufacturing, agribusiness, IT, and green energy sectors, where German companies have a wealth of expertise to contribute.

As we prepare for Ukraine’s future reconstruction, Moldova stands ready to become a strategic hub for these efforts. We are enhancing our infrastructure—building bridges, roads, and railways—to facilitate the transit of Ukrainian goods and strengthen our own links with the European Union, further integrating Moldova into the European community.

Our commitment to European integration is central to our national agenda. Moldova is undergoing significant transformations. We are enhancing our energy independence, aligning with the European standards, fighting corruption, and reforming our judicial system.

We are encouraged by Germany’s support, which helped secure the green light for Moldova’s EU accession talks, and we look forward to officially launching negotiations soonest.

And as we continue to pursue reforms and prepare for EU accession, we are grateful for Germany’s support in opening the way to Moldova’s eventual membership. We continue to rely on you to support and lead preparations of the EU to accept new members.

I would be honoured to host you, Chancellor, in Chisinau at your earliest convenience so that you can see for yourself the steps we are taking towards a more modern, prosperous Moldova.

Again, thank you and to all our friends in Germany, for your solidarity. Together, we are committed to building a peaceful, democratic Europe. Thank you.
