Moldovan president, British official approach EU integration

President Nicolae Timofti met First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom William Hague.

The two officials exchanged opinions about the situation in the region and Moldova’s European integration.

Timofti voiced concern about worsening security in the region as a result of events occurred in Ukraine, which could affect Moldova’s European integration. “My country needs the support of the Western partners to resist foreign pressures”, he said.

William Hague conveyed a message of solidarity with Moldovan people in the difficult current context.

Hague said the Great Britain opted for speeding up the signing by Moldova of the Association Agreement with the EU.

The British official said the EU would analyze in details concrete actions on backing Moldova, so that the EU assistance should boost and be more strongly felt by Moldovans the next months.

Hague said that at the forthcoming summit G7, the leaders of the most industrialized countries in the world would discuss a concept on energy independence of the European states, a concept that would include Moldova as well.
