Moldovan president meets Secretary General of International Organisation of La Francophonie

President Nicolae Timofti today had a meeting with Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie  (IOF), Michaëlle Jean, on an official visit to Moldova within a tour to countries of the Central and Eastern Europe.

President Timofti stressed the special significance of the Francophonie’s goals for Moldova, particularly in the context of marking the 20th anniversary of the country’s accession to IOF.  

The head of state expressed Moldova’s willingness to contribute to promoting the values of Francophonie as IOF full-fledged member. Timofti highlighted the affinities the people of Moldova had with the French-speaking area and noted that IOF was able to present viable solutions for diverse challenges.

For her part, the IOF Secretary General praised the continuity of Moldova’s efforts of publicizing the values of the Francophonie. The IOF official voiced opportunity to develop an integrated Francophone approach on fighting terrorism through participation in an international conference, due in Paris in next June. The event should be reflected in decisions of the Francophone Summit, due in Madagascar on 26-27 November 2016.   

During discussions, the IOF secretary general unveiled the organisation’s concerns for two strategic subjects: economic development and continuous professional training of young people. IOF is presently working out a strategy of economic development of the French-speaking area.  

On visit to Moldova, the IOF secretary general also mad meetings with the prime minister, education minister, representatives of the academic environment, etc.

The International Organisation of La Francophonie is made up of 57 member states and governments, as well as 23 countries with status of observer.
