Moldovan president proposes that EU signs Association Agreement by late May

President Nicolae Timofti today sent the members of the European Council, presidents and prime ministers a letter expressing Moldova’s intense wish to sign the Association Agreement, including the one on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) between Moldova and the European Union by late May.

The president sent similar letters to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

President Timofti suggests that the signing of the Association Agreement, including the accord on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, takes place at a meeting of EU heads of state or government due on 27 May.

The president welcomed an earlier decision by the European Council on the outrunning of the deadline for signing two agreements:

"We have taken note of the common will, displayed at the last meeting of the European Council, during which Moldova’s association to the European Union was discussed. I was glad to find out that, while considering the issue of outrunning the deadline for signing the two agreements against the date set in 2013, all aspects regarding Moldova and its near future, as well as the present complex domestic and regional contexts were taken into account", says the president’s letter to members of the European Council.

Nicolae Timofti thanked the EU Council members for the support provided Moldova so far:

"... I want to express my sincere thanks to you for your personal precious support given my country so far, so that we were able to sign these documents of crucial importance for the destiny of Moldova, and the Moldovans to travel visa-free to Europe starting from 28 April."
