Moldovan president, Lithuanian, Latvian foreign ministers tackle European agenda

President Nicolae Timofti today met Lithuanian and Latvian Ministers of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius and, respectively Edgars Rinkevics, on a visit to Moldova, the presidential press service has reported.

Timofti welcomed the two officials’ visit to Chisinau and thanked for the support provided by the Baltic States for Moldova’s European integration process. „The European partners’ solidarity encourages us to enhance efforts to modernise the country. Despite initiatives of some forces to block the country’s European integration, I am firmly confident that Moldova will sign the Association Agreement with the European Union in 2014,” Timofti said.

Edgars Rinkevics highlighted the importance to ensure Moldova’s European prospect. „We want to provide the needed assistance to implement the provisions of the Association Agreement with EU. In order to counteract external pressures, Moldova will be connected to the EU energy network and Moldovan producers will have access to the European sales market. At the same time, Moldovan citizens will be able to travel in Europe without visas,” Rinkevics said.

In the context, Timofti said that a campaign on promoting European values would be launched in Moldova soon, in order to impede the propaganda of denigrating the European Union.

Linas Linkevicius said that the reformation of the democratic institutions would allow Moldova to advance on its European course. „The reforms of the public administration, justice, education, agriculture, as well as fight against corruption remain foremost on the European integration agenda,” Linkevicius said.

The officials also approached the political situation in Ukraine and analysed the situation in the south Moldova autonomy and the Transnistrian region.
