Moldovan flags to be flown at half mast on 6 July in memory of Stalinist deportations

President Nicolae Timofti today signed a decree on commemorating the victims of Stalinism.

Thus, the state flags will be flown at half mast in all Moldovan settlements each year on 6 July. Also, at 10:00, Moldovans will honour the memory of those who experienced the ordeal of deportations by standing silent for one minute and flowers will be laid at monuments erected in the memory of the Stalinism victims.

In this respect, the public authorities, enterprises and organizations are recommended to give up carrying out mass entertainment actions on the day of the memory of Stalinism victims. The editorial offices of newspapers, radio and TV stations are urged to take into account the specific feature of the 6 July day when editing publications and forming the programmes on this day.

The decree was issued, in order to preserve in the public conscience the tragic moments in Moldova’s history, dealing with the mass repressions and exterminations of people on the period of deportations, as well as in order to educate the young generation in the spirit of freedom, democracy and respect for human personality.

The Stalinism victims day (6 July) was established under a parliament decision from No 116-XVI from 22 May 2008.
